More severe storms were expected to roll across the central U.S. this week following the weather-related deaths of more than two dozen people and a devastating Kentucky tornado.

Disastrous systems sweeping across the Midwest have left at least 26 dead, including nine people killed after a tornado sparked what authorities called a mass casualty event in southeastern Kentucky.

At least 28 people have died in severe weather that swept from the lower Midwest to the South over the weekend, with Missouri and Kentucky suffering the worst of it, authorities said.

The National Weather Service has confirmed two more tornadoes from the powerful line of storms that swept across Michigan late last week, bringing the total number of twisters to 11. The two latest confirmed tornadoes happened in Ottawa and Barry counties,

More storms will hit the U.S. in a multi-day severe weather event, after thunderstorms and tornadoes wreaked havoc over the weekend in multiple states and killed 28.

The National Weather Service says the tornado that struck St. Louis on Friday afternoon was an EF-3, with winds up to 152 mph.
