On Monday, the National Weather Service called it a once in a generation event. At least 8 inches fell in New Orleans, where no snow had accumulated since 2009. (It broke a previous record of 2.7 inches, according to the NWS .) It was also the largest winter storm to hit Jacksonville in 35 years and the biggest for Houston since 1960.
Hundreds of Alabama National Guard service members have been called to duty to help in the winter storm approaching the state. According to a news release, the activation on Jan. 19 involves more than 400 members who will operate out of seven regional facilities from Birmingham to Mobile.
