Fuming Nottingham Forest has slammed its own medical staff for allowing Taiwo Awoniyi to play on through "serious" injury. The Nigerian striker crashed into a post during their 2-2 Premier League draw with Leicester City on Sunday but still played on despite being treated at pitchside.

A Forest statement on Tuesday morning read: "The club can confirm Taiwo Awoniyi has undergone urgent surgery following an abdominal injury sustained during Sunday's match against Leicester City. "Everyone at Nottingham Forest sends their best wishes to Taiwo. The club will provide further updates when appropriate."

The Nigerian international sustained the injury late in the 2-2 draw at the City Ground, after colliding with the post.
