A 5-year-old bear born to grizzly bear royalty was fatally struck by a vehicle in Grand Teton National Park, officials said.

Grizzly 1058’s mother was Grizzly 399, a well-known bear that also lived in Grand Teton National Park. After Grizzly 399 was hit and killed by a car in October 2024, her death made headlines around the world and sent shockwaves through the Jackson Hole community.

Grizzly 399’s ashes were spread in the Pilgrim Creek area inside Grand Teton National Park. That was her home turf and probable birth place. She died at the age of 28, having raised 18 cubs. Grizzly 1058’s remains were also “put back into the park landscape,” according to the National Park Service.
